颚式破碎机是靠可动颚板周期地压向固定颚板，将夹于其中的物料压碎。两个颚板都是长方形的。颚式破碎机活动颚板的摆动可分为简单摆动、复杂摆动和组合摆动等三种。

颚式破碎机根据给料口宽度来区分型号的大、中、小；给料口宽度大于600mm者为大型；300～600mm者为中型；﹤300mm者为小型。其规格以给料口宽度B和长度L来表示，例如250×400颚式破碎机，表示其给料口宽250mm，长400mm。

加气混凝土厂通常采用中、小型复杂摆动式颚式破碎机，尤以250×400型号居多。

颚式破碎机的构造简单，检查和更换零件容易，管理和维修方便，运转时间比较长。其缺点主要是摆动性大，产生很大的惯性力，对机器基础要求较高，一般不宜于安装在楼层上。
